Audio Hiss

Definition:

Audio Hiss is additional noise in an audio track caused either by an elevated noise floor or analog source material. Audio Hiss impacts both the content and technical quality of an asset. The technical condition of the asset is poor and the customer may be unable to hear plot-pertinent information.

Severity Structure:

FYI

Archival footage is shown, along with period specific audio recording.

Needs Review

The audio hiss occurs under the dialogue, at a very low level in a specific scene.

Needs Fix

The audio hiss is very loud and noticeable. The audio gain has been increased, inducing artifacts.

Solution:

Please confirm if this is creative intent; otherwise, use plug in noise filters to clean up older audio. In more severe examples, decrease gain in the sections noted. To achieve desired creative intent, consider using either a wild track or foley elements.
