Frame Edge Shading

Definition:

Frame Edge Shading is when one or more edges of the frame are unintentionally darkened, softened, or have a vignette. Frame edge shading can negatively impact the customer experience by obscuring in-frame content, or reveal visual cues of the filmmaking process, ultimately removing the suspension of disbelief. It can sometimes be creatively intended, if the intent is to create an older "film-like" visual or experience.

Severity Structure:

N/A

Needs Review

There is a static frame with a softened or vignetted edge, however vignetting is unbalanced, e.g. top/ bottom/left /right mismatch

Needs Fix

There is a moving camera with visible vignetting with matte box or another type of obstructing object.

Solution:

Review and confirm if this is creative intent; otherwise, scale the image or introduce VFX to conceal it.
