Error Code:

Non-Native Aspect Ratio

Definition:

This error can be issued for two reasons:

  • The image is either squeezed or stretched, usually resulting from content encoded incorrectly at 4x3 or 16x9.
  • The content within the file we have received does not match the aspect ratio of the theatrical release. For example, if a theatrical release had an aspect ratio of 2.35:1, while the file we've received has an aspect ratio of 1.78:1, we are losing a lot of information from the left and right hand side of the image.

16x9 content encoded as 4x3

4x3 content encoded as 16x9

Solution:

Ensure that the profile used to create the file has the Pixel Aspect Ratio (PAR) set correctly.

Check what aspect ratio the theatrical release used. An easy way to do this that will work for the majority of content is to check the aspect ratio listed on IMDB.
