In certain applications it is critical to be able to see "Full Range" video, as opposed to "Legal Range".

The Video Range Test pattern file allows NETFLIX partners to quickly characterize their display chain to determine video range capability.

The display chain consists of the media player and the video hardware used to drive the display, plus the display itself. Many graphics cards and media will NOT present Full Range to their displays. Use SDI attached displays via video output card instead. Full range video display will help to expose noise or artifacts in dark areas, as well as over-exposed scenes where details are lost in the peak white area.

Greyscale Adjustment (Brightness)

In the test pattern video, the rectangular chips have heir respective LUMA values in the 8 bit scale. A display chain capable of full range should be able to display most of the chips below the value of 16 as shown. Increase the display Brightness until all chips are visible. Return Brightness to normal setting when finished. Normal setting is when chip 16 is perceived as the same level as 15 and below, but 17 and above are brighter than 16.

Greyscale Adjustment (Contrast)

In the test pattern video, the rectangular chips have heir respective LUMA values in the 8 bit scale. A display chain capable of full range should be able to display most of the chips below the value of 235 as shown. Increase the display Contrast or Backlight control until several chips above 235 are visible. Return Contrast or Backlight normal setting when finished. Normal setting is when chips above 235 do not have any color distortion or other artifact.
